The Continuance Institute

ORA/2005/03 · Speaks well of it

Wilfrid Prentice

Attending since 1983. Entry incomplete. Unattached. Recorded 7 July 2005, North House yard.

I walked most of it. Not for the romance of it — you cannot survey a boundary from a car, and half these places have a boundary nobody has looked at since the deed was written.

The schematic everybody uses is mine and it is wrong in two places, and I have said so in writing twice, and it is still printed. That is the Institute for you. It will carry an error forward for thirty years rather than reprint without a reconciliation.

Every year somebody asks me about my entry. Every year I say the same thing. It stands as made. I am not being mysterious; I simply have nothing to add, and I have noticed that people find nothing to add harder to accept than a refusal.

What I like: nobody has ever asked me to believe anything. Twenty-two years. Not once. I have been asked to move a great deal of timber.

Provenance

Recorded on cassette in the yard, traffic audible. A passage of two minutes is missing owing to a tape fault at the turnover and has not been reconstructed.
