NOTES

1. The correspondent writes to the other houses with the fact and the

date. Nothing else is written. The letter is four lines at most.

2. The funeral is the family's. People from the house go as people. The

Institute has no rite and does not send a representative as such.

3. The account is closed and the entries stand. This is the same entry

made when a person leaves. The Record does not distinguish between

the two, because it records work and not people.

4. Work in hand is carried and both hands are named in the ledger, for

as long as the work runs. A catalogue begun by one person and finished

by four names four people and the person who began it.

5. Nobody succeeds to the place. The place is not filled as a place; the

duties are distributed on the rota like any others. No form of words

describing a person as taking somebody's place is to be used.

6. There is no memorial observance, no anniversary, and no reading kept

for the purpose. A house that wishes to remember somebody may do what

people do, which is to mention them.

7. Nothing is said or written about where anybody has gone. The Institute

has no view and is not to be understood as having one.
