COLLATION OF TRANSCRIPTIONS A TO D. THIRD STATE. E. L. H.
Transcriptions A, B, C, and D were made by me from the copy-text at intervals of not less than four months, under the rules set out in Quire I. No transcription was consulted while another was made.
Substantives: agreement at every point. There is no verbal variant between the four.
Accidentals: agreement at every point but two, both of which are my own slips of the pen and are struck through in the originals.
Order of clauses: A and C agree. B and D agree. A and B do not agree at nineteen points. The nineteen points are listed overleaf with folio and line.
I record, because it is the kind of thing that is afterwards said to have been suppressed, that the odd-numbered transcriptions were made in the winter and the even-numbered in the summer, and that I can make nothing of this and do not propose to try.
What the table shows: that four transcriptions made by one hand from one exemplar differ in order and in nothing else.
What the table does not show: which of them is right. That question cannot be settled from the table. It can be settled from the copy-text, and I intend to settle it, and until I have settled it I would be obliged if the reader would refrain from settling it for me.
Held at the North House with the rest of the deposit. The list of nineteen points referred to overleaf is present and gives folio and line only. The folios are not those of any manuscript otherwise described in the deposit.
