Standing note on attribution and authority

PRINTED AT THE FRONT OF THE FIFTH EDITION PRO/2024/04

This book has no authority. It is an anthology, assembled by people

who disagreed with one another, printed at a price, and revised when

somebody could be found to do the work.

Nothing in it may be cited in a minute as settling a question. No

edition supersedes another in any sense but the printer's. A reading

may be omitted, cut, replaced, mistranslated, or disliked aloud at

the table, and the house is not in the wrong.

Attribution is given after the reading. The words come first.
