Conservation note: recovered papers, October loss

CONSERVATION NOTE CON/1999/02

1. Material recovered comprises the contents of the ground-floor study: eleven box files, two ledgers, a shelf of bound Journals, and loose papers to a depth of some four inches on the desk and floor.

2. Treatment. Air-drying under weight, six weeks, in the unheated end of the archive room. Interleaving renewed twice. Nine items were sent out for freeze-drying and returned in December.

3. Losses in treatment: two ledger pages, illegible before treatment and illegible after; the spine linings of four Journals.

4. Materials held on the upper floor at the time of the loss remain unaccounted for. They are entered as not held. A list of what is believed to have been there is kept with this note and is not to be read as an inventory of what was lost, since the list itself was made from memory.

5. The room was photographed before clearance. The photographs are held and are not published.
