Local history

Recognised in 1998. The water round was adopted in 2003 after two summers in which members had been doing it privately and not entering the hours anywhere, an omission the circle corrected in its return and then explained at some length.

It is the largest circle affiliated with Lantern House and supplies most of the volunteers for the house's own summer work.

Transport and winter provision

Summer water round, held with a district mutual aid group and a neighbourhood shelter.

Water, shade cloth, and a telephone round through the summer heat; a coat and blanket round in January.

The forms it carries

  • The Quiet Twelve

    Twelve minutes are kept before the reading. Nothing is assigned to the silence.

  • The Repair Table

    A table, a bench, or a marked shelf where ordinary objects wait to be mended.

  • The Weather Entry

    Before the first shared meal of the month, one person writes the weather in the house book.

Local variation. The weather entry is kept for heat rather than for cold, and the circle's returns treat July the way northern circles treat February.
