The house

The house was established in 2011 in a brick building that had been a doctor's surgery and then, briefly and unsuccessfully, a restaurant. The waiting room made an unusually good clinic room and was kept.

The legal-literacy programme is delivered with a law school clinic: residents are not lawyers and do not give advice, but they can read a lease, explain a notice period, and sit beside somebody at a hearing.

The family archives work grew out of the housing clinic. Households facing eviction frequently held the only surviving papers of families the county's own archives had never recorded. The house digitises them, gives the originals back, and deposits copies only with permission.

Gloved hands lifting a loose bundle of letters onto a padded rest beside a flatbed scanner.

The work

Observance kept here

The reading of letters

Once a month a letter from a previous resident is read at the evening meal. The house keeps them in a tin, unsorted.

The shared forms, here

The Quiet Twelve
Kept in the hour after the evening meal rather than before it, because the clinic rota rarely allows an unbroken twelve minutes at six.
The Boundary Walk
The visiting round: the addresses on the current list are checked for access, steps, handrails, and lighting.

The house year

Local participation

Separation
Notice to the steward. The minute book records the reassignment and not the notice.

A life in the practice

The steward

Warren Dabney

Carpenter · steward since 2017

Built the clinic room's shelving and then found himself running the rota. Sits in on hearings when nobody else can.
