Local history

Ljubljana was recognised in 1994, three years after the standing orders and two years after Karst House itself began receiving visitors. Its founding members were largely people who had worked on the house's own water and had continued meeting once the work was finished.

The path and springs work is done under a written agreement renewed every five years. The circle's returns record hours, metres of revetment, and nothing else; the association keeps its own record and the two are reconciled each spring without difficulty.

Meetings are held in Slovene. The annual return is submitted in Slovene with an English summary, an arrangement adopted in 1996 and copied since by four other circles.

The outward obligation

Repair and restoration

Water and path work, held with a regional walking and springs association.

Clearing springs, rebuilding path revetments, and marking routes. Three working weekends a year and a great deal of correspondence in between.

The forms it carries

  • The Quiet Twelve

    Twelve minutes are kept before the reading. Nothing is assigned to the silence.

  • The Repair Table

    A table, a bench, or a marked shelf where ordinary objects wait to be mended.

  • The Boundary Walk

    At the start of each season the practical boundary is walked and what is wrong with it is written down.

  • The Weather Entry

    Before the first shared meal of the month, one person writes the weather in the house book.

Local variation. The boundary walk is the circle's principal form. It has no boundary of its own, so it walks a section of the karst path system and enters what it finds.
